The Blessings of the Season

Christmas time is a time I love most. Decorating the house, getting ready for family gathering and celebrating the birth of our Lord, Jesus Christ with those I love.

This year I wanted to have a winter wonderland since we have no snow here where I live. The table in the dining room is the center of this wonderland.

Hidden away on the china cabinet are the Snowbabies playing quietly.

On the window seat are my two favorite bears, enjoying the frosty trees and view of the wonderland on the dining table.

The Christmas tree stands tall waiting for gifts to cover bareness beneath.

The beauty awaits the joy to be shared.

Another class Tracie Lyn and I will be teaching for Ruth Rae is the bracelet made of VELVET & LACE. This is a class filled with fun and intrigue for creating a bracelet resembling a piece of jewelry from the past. Using velvet ribbon, bits of vintage lace, satin ribbon and vintage buttons coupled with a variety of beads and jewelry hardware we will spend the day exploring the art of days gone by.

Techniques will include, not only sewing and triming in a way to give an aged appeal but also the stringing of beads, crocheting buttons and crimping to finish this most lovely jeweled treasure. An optional bonus will be to embroidery a handmade pillow for displaying.

Once completed students will enjoy wearing this bracelet on special occasions or as a necklace with a treasured dress.

EXPLORATION IN MIXED MEDIA

The past few weeks have been filled with a busy schedule of creating Mixed Media samples for the class Tracie Lyn and I are teaching for a fellow teacher, Ruth Rae. She has been ill the past few monthes and is unable to attend International Quilt so we were asked to teach her classes.

As most of our time was scheduled for getting ready to teach our proposed class, it was necessary for us to create samples, class outline and class kits for the students in the Exploration in Mixed Media Class.

Here is a sneak peak at samples:

This is created with various burning effects using a heat gun and candle on a variety of fabric media. RocLon bump is used as the background for the piece.

In this piece are Roc-Lon Multi Purpose Cloth, various other fabrics and trims all afixed to a vintage quilt piece from a flea market find. Behind the door is a small doll given to me years ago at an art event from a student. I have always loved the doll and wanted to include it in a special piece. This is just the right piece.

Creating this piece was a lot of fun. I made resin paper, created a transparency, then used various fabrics and burning to give the aged look.

I am excited to teach this class with several techniques. We will be demonstrating the resin paper process, review the art of printing transparency images. burning techniques using both a heat gun and a candle on various fabrics, trims, laces etc., followed by assemblage to create a lovely work of art.

GALLERY SHOW

July 16 thru August 22 is the gallery show at Muchnic Gallery in Atchison, Kansas. I am honored to have been asked to show my pictures created with scraps of ribbons, yarns, threads, fabrics and other fibers. Each picture is a one-of-a-kind creation framed in a black frame.

The artwork provides me a way to recycle scraps and small bits of fibers that I would otherwise toss. I frequently use small trims and embellishments that I find at antique stores. At other times I purchase French trims, flowers, and buttons at a favorite shop in California.

I hope you enjoy the works as much as I have enjoyed creating them.

Once the gallery show is over I plan to include the remaining works among the items for purchace in my etsy shop.

This is a favorite: I call it "Le'Fleur". It has silk flowers, crocheted stem, felted centers in the flowers on black velvet.

This is "Spheres". It consists of three separate spheres placed one on the other, then placed on a black velvet background.

"Mystique" is the name for this creation. It has a very unique French lace and buttons. The way the lace is made was a bit mysterious to me thus the name for the artwork was born.

"Sumburst" became the name for this work. I created it then decided to have the ragged backdrop to create the look of the rays extending beyond the sphere.

I have a favorite work named "Sea Beauty" which has captured my heart. It was my very first picure and I just cannot bring myself to part with it. I wanted to include it in the gallery show but decided I would create a sister to it. Thus, I created this piece, " Sea Beauty II". I love the use of the peacock feathers to create to look of a sea creature.

Creating Gallery Pictures

Sorting through all my yarns, threads, fabric scraps, wild flowers, buttons and other ephemera to create artwork for the gallery show.

Stiching ribbons, yerns and threads to create a 4 x 6 inch piece of fabric to include in artwork.

Snippets and bits come together to creat geometric shapes accented with various yarns then stitched onto black velvet before framing.

This piece includes unique trims and floral buttons from France sitting atop a scrap of sheer tuille and stitched to black velvet.

Well, back to creating new pieces.....

May INchie Swap

The Month of May I hosted the swap for my INchie group. The theme was "Flowers". Each of us made a tiny one inch by one inch work of art with a flower. Then all sent the INchies to me so I could make a display.

As I created my tiny works I kept thinking, "How am I going to display them?"

Then as I was searching for items to use I came across some vintage album pages. These will work great!

Now to figure out what to include on them without taking away the unique beauty of each tiny INchie. Vintage Music! and some more flowers!

I began to decorate the vintage pages and create a small canvas for the the tiny works to frame them in the opening of the pages.

Once I finished, this is what each Special INchie Diva Artist received!

SETTLING IN

Since returning home from ArtFest I have been busy sorting, packing and moving items into my new studio. The work my hubby did has exceeded my dreams! It is a beautiful shade of lavender, both ceiling and floor, and has lovely white wood trim and pillar with teakwood floor. Cabinets and office furniture are black.

In the desk and files area there is a small chandelier. A vintage shelf where I have placed cherished items is above the file cabinet.

In the area where I have all the sewing machines and other quilting items there is a larger chandelier. I LOVE IT!

An island that has wheels so I can move it is located in the center of the room.

Outside the walk-in closet is a perfect place for my bookshelves. (I have lots of books)

This is the most FABULOUS retirement gift! I could not have imagined what it would be like to have a room that is twice the size of the former bedroom I was using for a studio and a lovely walk-in clost. I am VERY LUCKY to have this as a place to retreat and create. Now that I am retired I want to spend a lot of time creating.

Atchison Art Walk

Atchison, Kansas is hosting an Art Walk Friday evening, April 29th from 5:30 to 8:30PM. There will be approximately 25 artists displaying their works within the various businesses. Eash artist will be in a business beginning at the Missouri River area and ending on North 8th street. This is not only an opportunity to see great art but also historic architecture in Atchison.

I will be displaying my work at Willow Brook, located at 117 N. 8th. Please stop by and see what I have created. Using scrps of yars, threads, ribbons, material, feathers and any other "dry" materials I have assembled them in to artworks like the ones below. Materials used are the scraps left from sewing, knitting and other mixed media works.

Living in the midwest I have witnessed many storms throughout the years. While the storms are extremely turbulent theyeye of the storms have a fascinating calm about them.
The "Eye of the Storm" represents that calmness.

One of my favorite works is "Sea Beauty".
It was inspired by the beauty of the Pacific Ocean. While gazing at the horizon of ocean meeting the sky I was facinated by what lies beneath the water. It must be as beautiful as the surface!

This work depects the flowers in my garden and is appropriately titled
"Garden Splendor".

Enjoy a spring Friday evening touring Atchison's historic businesses to see the work of local artisans. What a unique way to spend the evening!

Techniques for Celebrating Spring's Arrival

In one month I will be heading off to ArtFest to teach two FABULOUS classes! Since ArtFest is one of Tracie and my favorite retreats, we are teaching classes that are special and "one-of-a-kind" thus, will not be taught at any other retreat!

ArtFest was our first ever art retreat, where we began as students, vended then finally have had the privilege to teach for the past several years. When we attended the First Artfest, we fell in love with the breath-taking beauty of the area and the hosts of this magical event, Tracy and Teesha Moore.

Even after 12 or 13 years of participating in this event, I continue to be overwhelmed by the awe everytime I arrive. Magic wraps around me like a blanket warming my heart. Participatng in fabulous classes, rubbing shoulders with top notch instructors, meeting new friends,drinking-in the absolutely breath-taking beauty of the surroundings, reveling in each lovely experience touches my deepest being. I don't think I feel quite so alive and able to live wholly in the moment like I do during Artfest.

Once again, I am so honored to be teaching, sharing my knowledge and skills, passing along the love of nature to those wonderful individuals that choose to spend their time in one of my classes.

I am extremely excited about this year's workshops and want to extend a personal invitation to be part of one or both, which are Artfest exclusives. This is definitely the one and only opportunity to learn these very unique techniques for creating nature inspired, stunning works of art in 2011.

Creating at The French General

One of my favorite places to visit and teach is "The French General" which is owned an operated by Kaari Meng, artist,designer and one of the nicest persons you can meet.

On Saturday, January 29th, Tracie and I will be teaching students how to create lovely Butterfly Missives where the butterflies will appear to lift into the air. We are participating in Kaari's weekend "Art of Crafting Event".

Seeing the Forest and the Trees

This is the forest of trees that I created then decorated with the INchies made by the INchie Divas in the yahoo group that I lead. Each small 1" x 1" work of art became a tiny ornament for the fabric trees.

We create this tiny masterpieces with a theme in mind then the hostess collects and returns them to each artist. What fun we have creating and sharing.

I wanted to create something different for the "Holiday 2010" swap so designed the tree from muslin, painted the muslin, sewed it together, stuffed with poly fill, glued to a plastic bowl painted black then attached miniature ornaments and the tiny works of art.

This is my project today. I am getting ready for International Quilt Houston.

Using snippets and bits I love to create fabric then transform it for use in various projects. Today I am making quilt squares.

The snippets and bits are the "trash" from other projects. I save the smallest bits of threads, fabrics, silk florals, glitter, lace and any other item that would otherwise end up in the trash.

As I work on a project I keep a ziplock taped to the table and just drop all the snippets in it as I go. Once it is full I zip it up, toss it into a tote, take another ziplock and start to fill it. This keeps my snippets separated by color just in case I want to make a certain color of fused fabric.

Using a bonding technique with Steam-A-Seam2 I then bond all the little snippets onto unbleached muslin. Once I have finished making the square of fabric (usually a 18 inch square) I lay it aside until I need a piece of fabric for a project.

The 18 inch squares can be cut into various shapes or sized. The following are quilt blocks I am making from some of my stash of fused fabrics.

As you can see the larger 18 inch pieces have been cut into smaller pieces then used to create a square for a quiltlet.

This is the piece I posted previously. It is almost completed. The hand dyed velvet edging needs handsewn on the edges then it will be finished.

The backing is is a coordinated fabric that I sewed the small fused pieces onto. Since the fused fabrics consist of several layers no quilt batting is necessary. It is naturally padded. I sewed along the edges of each small fused piece thus no extra quilting is needed either.

EXCITING TIMES.....

.....abound. Tracie and I spent the weekend sewing madly creating items from her new line of fabrics that will be unveiled at International Quilt Market - Houston later this month.

Here is a sneak peak of her "Nature Inspired" fabric line. FabShop News Trade Magazine has dedicated a whole editorial page in their latest issue highlighting two of Windham Fabrics new lines....Tracie Lyn and Paige Stanley Miller were the honored designers.

A Week in Paradise

In September 2010 Tracie and I had the privilege of teaching in Orvieto, Italy at an event organized by Adventures in Italy (Bill and Kristin Steiner). After arriving in Rome we rode a train to a most captivating town located high on a plateau. As it appeared on the horizon we were in awe of its beautifully ageless architecture. Orvieto took our hearts and minds back hundreds of years while our eyes absorbed the artistic creations spanning generations of a people that love their heritage. Every street and building was a tribute to the past. It was apparent that loving hands had cared for every stone, door and design in tribute to the ancestors who had painstakingly carved each one.

Not only did Bill and Kristin greet us with open arms of friendship but every person we met along our journey did the same. Smiles accompanied Italian greetings sprinkled with broken English as each Orvieto native aided us in finding our way around the city.

Passing through the enormous gates to Instituto San Lodovico involked a peace beyond description. As we entered I turned to Tracie and said, "I feel as though I am entering heaven." That peacefulness filled my heart the entire week.

Each day of the week the students and us spent time in the studio creating then toured the city to explore and marvel at its history and beauty. Bill and Kristin planned an activity every day. These included cooking with a famous chef, touring a vineyard, shopping at the market and, of course, eating Italian cusine.

Saying goodbye to the view from our window left us sad yet filled with gratitude that we shared this experience together.

We hugged one another then with tears in our eyes we whispered, "Farewell", to the city that had captured our hearts.

As the week came to a close, Tracie and I were invited to return in 2012. Needless to say we are thrilled at the possiblity of returning to this paradise. Going to Italy was a dream we never thought possible. Now to think of returning is exciting to say the least. We would love to have you join us. If you have ever wanted to see the creations of the Great Masters this is the perfect opportunity! Make plans now to ensure you will be part of this adventure.

We look forward to sharing this experience with you.

STUDIO UPDATE....

The latest news on the new studio is that the drywall guys have the walls and ceiling finished. The ceiling has the "knocked down" finish. Hubby has primed the ceilings.

Yesterday we went to the paint store to select the colors. I decided to step out of the box and have the ceiling be a color. The color selected is "simple violet" which is a very light shade. The walls in the walk-in closet will also be this color.

The color for the walls in the studio will be "Pleasant Violet" which is a shade or two darker than the ceiling. Originally I was thinking yellow but as I was looking at colors the violet kept catching my eye. So I thought I can use yellow for some of the accents in the room.

Hubby is priming the walls today....soon the color will begin!

All is taking shape and the excitement is building.

Quiltlet Finished

Here is the finished quiltlet for International Quilt Auction. It is called Floral Fields. Has a fabric background with silk flowers handsewn on with small seed beads giving a dimensional effect. The grass is yarns also sewn by hand to create the hill and valleys as well as small mounds of grass. It represents fields of flowers with a small pond and white clouds in the summer sky.

DREAMS DO COME TRUE

Currently my studio is a spare bedroom which has been stripped of all bedroom identity to become a place where I spend my time creating. Of course, I have way too much stuff so it is overcrowded and cramped. Here are a couple of pictures:

For many years I have dreamed of having a studio with plenty of room and good storage. Well, that dream is close to becoming a reality thanks to my fantastic hubby. He has been working to add a space to our unused basement for me to use for a studio. When I retired the gift from him was that he would build me my dream studio. Keep in mind that this was a totally unused area in our basement that was crammed with just plain "junk" and old keepsakes.

While it was basically a clean slate for building a studio it required a lot of prep work before he could even begin. It had to be cleared, wired, framed and drywalled. He began by giving me measurements for the area and I did a rough drawing of how I wanted it to be. Then, he began. The new space is a little more than twice the size of the space I curently have.

We cleared most of the collected junk from the area. Some large items had to remain and he has worked around them. This, I am sure, created many a challenge for him.

I wanted to share some pictures of the process with you, my friends. This is my hubby working away creating my dream room a little at a time:

Here is a view peering into the walk-in closet! Yes, I will have a closet, approximately 6x8 feet with shelves where I can store my fabric so I can actually SEE what I have! No more digging through storage totes to see if I have something!! Yeah!!

A couple of views of the sheetrock completed. Today he has completed hanging the sheetrock.

While there is still a lot to do, I am THRILLED to see the studio taking shape.

Many tasks to be completed: finishing the sheetrock, painting walls, wood trim installed and painted, recepticles to be installed, lighting, building cabinets and putting in the work island....and all the finishing touches. Can hardly wait for sharing the completed project.

I am still undecided on wall color and the rug for the reading and office area. And I need to decide on the desk, chairs, filing cabinets for the office area. We will be hanging a television, DVD player on the wall to prevent using valuable table top areas.

There will be a couple of small chandeliers in the studio. Here is a picture of them:

Hopefully, I will be set up in the new studio before the holiday season! I have a lot of ephemera, fabric and just plain "stuff" to sift through before moving into the new studio. Besides getting totally organized is at the top of the list and I am sure it will be quite the task.

I know I have been silent for a while but have been busy revamping myself. Trying to decide my artful direction, sorting through much much art stuff and trying to get things out of the way of hubby who is building me a new studio. It is totally from an unfinished area in the basement and is requiring framing, wiring, building cabinets etc......

Basement is a mess with years of "stuff" but he is hanging in there. We have been busy picking out light fixtures, deciding what will go where, what is needed, etc.

Due to the astute observance of our youngest son I will have a walk-in closet in the studio. We were originally going to have the door in one area but he pointed out that there would be pipes in the way of the door. So after "suggesting" we relocate the door he observed that there would be a much wasted space in the unfinished area of the basement.......just the space for a walk-in closet! Yeah!!!

Etsy shop has been begging for items for a couple of years as working in my audit manager job and teaching at retreats just gave no time for creating. Hope to unveil some new creations soon.

Quilt Chicago 2010

Today, Earth Day, is the perfect day to share my experience at Quilt Chicago. Classes and demos all focused on eco friendly projects and recyling to create items that make great gifts for friends.

Ending a whirlwind week in the Windy City was bittersweet. Classes and students were terrific. Talent was overflowing. Friendships, old and new, filled the week with joy, fun, sharing and laughter.

Fabrics in the Dyeing in the Kitchen were dyed using edible dyes from the kitchen cabinet and veggies for stamps to create unique designs. Skittles, M&M's, carrots, celery, cauliflower.....what fun!

Cloth Paper Scissor's Open Studio was the perfect place to demo these gift tags made from snippets and bits. Previous creations yielded these tiny pieces of scraps that became lovely gift tags.

In the Saturday Sampler I demonstrated making notebooks using more snippets, bits, leftover ribbons, silk flowers and small notebooks. These are a fun, easy way to make a special gift for friends. Recycle, recycle, recycle.....

Sunday Shuffle gave me the opportunity to demo paperbag wallets......another great recycle project.

Quilt Chicago

QUILT BLOCK JOURNALING CLASS

This is a fun class in which Tracie Lyn and I will show you how to take a favorite memory or event to create a unique one-of-a-kind quilt block. This is a way to capture your thoughts and incorporate them into a quilt or wall hanging.

Thoughts for the quilt block may come from your journal or perhaps a wedding album, baby book or a child's summer camp adventure. You will learn a technique that can be used in many ways to immortalize thoughts and events that are special. There is nothing better than to have a quilt covered in memories wrapped around you to warm your heart.

Classes fill quickly at Quilt so we urge you to register for this class as soon as possible. We are excited to know that something we will teach you provides a way to enjoy special memories.

Paper Bag Wallets

Getting together the kits for International Quilt Chicago. These are fun and easy paper bag wallets. Great way to use up paper bags and scraps of fabrics and ribbon.

This wallet uses bright fun fabric scraps. Adds a splash of color for those plain jeans and a t-shirt.

These will hold a cell phone and a small wallet.

And when made in a more traditional fabric becomes a cute addition to an outfit for church or special occasion.

Great way to recycle those paper lunch bags!

Going to CHA was such a fun experience. Lots of activity and seeing many friends filled the days in a most rewarding way. Made new friends.....what an experience attending CHA for the first time!

Then to make it an even more rewarding experience Tracie and I taught at The French Gneral! I cannot say enough good things about Kaari. She is a hostess above all! We felt at home from the moment she walked outside to meet us in the parking lot. Her hospitality, open heart and giving ways made us want to stay there and visit for hours.

Class was great....attendees included new students and a repeat who brought her lovely daughter. Talent abounded in the room as they all took brushes in hand then began painting and creating.

Then as the trip came to a close.......NOTHING could top the party at The French General! It was a blast and, again, hosted by the two lovely women, Kaari and Jo Packham (creator of Where Women Create).

Kaari'e dad was our bartender! He was great and a lot of fun!

Somewhat sadly we headed home the next morning...the ending to a Memorable weekend!

Discover Italy in the Fall.......

Every day spent in Italy is one filled with new discoveries and this coming fall will be no exception. We will enjoy an architectural tour of historic building styles evident in nearly every street in Orvieto. This will offer a rare look at the vast layers hiding beneath many common sites in town. Layers of history will be revealed before your eyes. You will see Estrucan sites from 600 BC that were eventually taken over by the Romans. Elaborate mosaic floors in excellent condition will enable you to imagine what a Roman temple may have been like. Christians followed and took parts and pieces of this historic past then reconstructed a church, adding even more layers. Feeling and seeing this historical site will make a vivid impression on you for years to come.

Orvieto is a welcoming town with an architectural style than can only be absorbed through the experience of being there, touching and smelling the air.

Gardens and ancient walkways will capture your heart and senses. The plants growing freely on the landscape will present a visual delight.

Shopping at the market provides a discover of lucious foods and wines to enjoy. This will be experienced as we cook and eat the Italian way.

My Heart Was Touched By An Angel......

when I received an unexpected phone call from an acquaintance.

As many of you know my mother passed two years ago the day after Thanksgiving. Well, yesterday I received a very unexpected phone call from one of her friends. I only met this friend a couple of times but I knew my mom thought a lot of her and truly valued their friendship. Her name is Norma.

She called me to let me know that she had been thinking of me and knew that the holidays were a difficult time for me. She wanted to let me know that she missed mom also. She shared some of the good times they had together with friends shopping, playing board games and bingo. She told me how my mom was always thoughtful and giving to those she knew were less fortunate than her or those who had no one. My mom would always make sure they got some little something for Christmas. One part that touched me deeply is that I knew my mom truly cared about others....especially children.

When I hung up the phone with tears welling in my eyes I said a "Thank You" to God as I needed that phone call. Norma was correct I do miss my mom a lot during the holidays and Norma is the Angel that touched my heart and I could see why mom called her "Friend"!

OFFICE TURKEYS

Last night I searched through my studio to see if there were any items that could be used to create turkeys. As I looked at all the ephemera that was lying about I couldn't begin to guess how the items would be assembled to create the turkeys that would decorate the office.

With bags of "turkey makin's" in hand I headed to work anxious to see the creative genius that was sleeping in the minds of the audit staff. Today was the day to make turkeys from the pumpkins and gourds and various other items from my studio. These fabulous creations came to be from gluing silk flowers, leaves, pipe cleaners, beads, paper, and other miscellaneous onto the pumpkins and gourds.

What a GREAT group of artistic talented people I have the pleasure of working beside.

Couldn't wait to share as the turkeys are so cute and unique.

With autumn in the air and the color of the trees beginning to fade to make way for winter's white blanket I created this wall hanging. It colors are brilliant like autumn's painted landscape.

The sunflower is painted on a transparency so that when hung the sunlight can shine through it or when hung on a wall the color of the wall creates an added hue.

Wheggies for Art and Soul - Portland

I have been working away in my studio creating for the Art & Soul vendor show. Decided to make a few of my Wheggie ornaments. These are figments from my imagination based on adventures I have been creating for a couple of years now. Following the pictures on this post I have included a brief description of what the Wheggies are all about.

As I stitched heads, wings, tiny bodies and dresses I am always touched by the meaning of the Wheggies and wanted to share that with you. Each of these small creatures represent a loving and giving way to share in the caring and nurturing world around us. Their tiny stature, only about 5 inches tall, contains a large heart!

This is the group of Wheggies that are waiting to be packaged carefully for their adventure to Art & Soul and, perhaps, a new home with one of you.

Meet the Wheggie that found a lovely piece of Vintage jewelry in hopes of finding the owner or someone who will love the piece an cherish it.

Here is a brief synopsis of the Wheggie Adventures and what the Wheggies are all about:

In all the land that is near, Wheggies scurry about spreading joy, happiness, beauty, and love. Wheggies are small angel fairies present everywhere. They are various colors and no two look alike. Individuality plays an important part in the role of a Wheggie with its name being indicative of the work it performs. Each instinctively knows its purpose and immediately pursues its daily tasks with vigor and purity of heart.

While all humans enjoy the fruits of Wheggies’ labor, rarely are they aware of the Wheggies’ presence. Often the only time a human will experience awareness of a Wheggie’s presence is when a slight touch is felt but nothing is seen ...or when a gentle drop of moisture falls unexplained upon the cheek. The slight touch that tickles the skin is a Wheggie’s wing brushing gently as it swishes past. The moisture drop is the gentle kiss of a Wheggie.

Words cannot describe the feelings of joy and happiness within a human that the loving, caring nature of a Wheggie creates. The love of a Wheggie is “felt”.. not seen or touched. The love of a Wheggie rests within the heart.

Some Wheggies go about their daily tasks during the day while others work under the cover of the darkness of night. Regardless of when it works, a Wheggie always sleeps in a willow tree beside a babbling brook. During the nighttime hours the leaves of the willow surrounds the sleeping Wheggie like a curtain of moonbeams..... And as the Wheggies of the night sleep during the daylight hours the willow creates a gentle curtain of shade protecting them from the bright sunlight.

From time to time humans lose pieces of treasured jewelry that go unfound no matter how diligent the search. When a Wheggie discovers a lost treasure it places the cherished gem in its hair or on its garment. It is considered the ultimate act of love to rescue a lost gem. The Wheggie wears the gem forever with pride and joy.

As a Wheggie flies swiftly about the land, the fullness of its hair creates a breeze that blows gently to assist the bees and other insects as they move about. The hair is a distinguishing mark of a Wheggie and flows about like a soft cloud floating in the sky. The Wheggie’s garment, hair and wings reflect the colors surrounding it as it works, thus enabling it to blend with the environment and remain unseen. The gem it wears reflects sunbeams creating a prism of color. Clouds capture the colors then transform them into a beautiful rainbow following a gentle rain.

So, as you smell the sweetness of a breeze, see a beautiful flower, or admire the twinkle of a star, think about all the Wheggies working in harmony and synchronized in the feelings of love. Don’t brush away the tickle felt on your arm...... Don’t wipe away the gentle drop of moisture on your cheek..... Instead, smile and enjoy the warmness in your heart as you have been touched or kissed by a Wheggie as it passed closely by you.

Art Unraveled and Sharing Time with Friends!

Spent last week at FABULOUS Art Unraveled! It was a time for creating where an atmosphere of talent and friendships filled the air. Linda, Chuck, Lori and all the other helpers made this an event to remember.

Started with an evening event for "Meet The Artists". Once the table was ready and the doors opened many friendly faces and smiles greeted me and warmed my heart. Hugs and sharing stories since last we met, students and friends surrounded me enjoying the time to visit and reminiscing on memories of times shared.

The next morning it was time to teach a class on the "Painted Nature Pendent". This was a great beginning for the week of teaching classes. The students were eager to learn, loaded with talent..... anxious to share laughter and fun for the day. Here are the BEAUTIFUL results! WOW! Tracie and I are so proud!

Thursday began relaxing at breakfast followed by a meeting with the INchie Divas so I could give them the journal I had made each of them.

We headed out to do some shopping and ended up at Mystic Paper! What a store!

Kim and Jennifer are terrific! The store is AMAZING!

Around the top of the store are vintage photos of their families. CAPTIVATING! Love this store. If you get to Phoenix it is well worth a trip for shopping.

After dinner it was time for the "Petite Painted Portrait" class. This class was ready to spend the evening creating and showed up to class with a lot of enthusiasm. As the evening progressed we watched these talented artists create a collection of BEAUTIFUL tiny works of art! Look for yourselves!

Friday came and we took the day slow. Didn't have a class until evening so we visited a couple of places in Phoenix then went to have lunch with friends. Visited with friends the rest of the afternoon before getting ready to teach our evening class. As students arrived they were anxious to begin creating and the results of the class speaks for itself. Look at the "Petite Vintage Journals" created by these wonderful artists!

As we hugged students, friends, Linda and all her crew we bid them a fond farewell until next year.

We were leaving quite early on Saturday to return to our midwestern homes.

Sad to be leaving our friends yet excited because my middle son was returning from Afghanistan an hour after Tracie and I would arrive home! The ending to a fun filled week!

A Typical Day

So you are thinking about joining us on our trip to Orvieto. What will a typical day be like? It will be a mix of artistic expression and cultural exploration. You will learn and eat and play and explore and simply enjoy!

You will awake to a peaceful quiet, perhaps punctuated by bells out in the city. Each room has its own bathroom in which to prepare for the day. Descend the stairs for breakfast in a room sporting 15th century frescoes. Cheese, fruit, cereal, coffee, bread – a Continental breakfast greets you.

From there it is to the classroom for a morning of exploration and learning. We might be in class or you might be out on an assignment, an excursion in which you explore a bit of the city. We will gather for lunch with any spouses and friends who have joined us on the trip, comparing notes on our morning. Good food is a given, whether we picnic with food we have bought or go to a very local restaurant.

We'll have a bit of quiet time after lunch. Some of us may nap, some explore the city, some get into the studio to do a little work on our project.
Then, later in the afternoon, we will head out on a cultural adventure, exploring the Italian way of life, the things that make Italy and Orvieto so intriguing and appealing.

An olive oil and wine tasting in a space inhabited by Etruscans, a cooking class where we make pasta and other goodies, a visit to a vineyard where we get to sample local wines, a look at the incredible cathedral, or Etruscan history, or medieval architecture.

Sated with culture we will enjoy one of Orvieto's many wonderful restaurants. Whether for pizza which is indescribably wonderful, or a traditional multi-course meal, we will eat well. Then back to the quiet of our B&B, maybe grabbing a gelatto to enjoy along the way.

Mmm, I'm looking forward to more tomorrow!

Thinking of a Friend

I have a friend who is ill so I wanted to send her a little something to let her know I was thinking of her. Put together this notebook for her to carry in her bag or lay by her bedside. It is a small notebook 3x5 inches so is a good size to carry.

Using fabric scraps from fabrics I created I covered the front and back. Trimmed with bits of lace, ribbons and yarns then lined the insides of the covers with pieces of a printed fabric.

Fun and easy way to create a small gift from the heart!

Cassie is Home!

We got to bring our precious Cassie Kitty home today. She has improved much but still needs to eat more. We are so very happy to have her home again.

She has wandered through the entire house.....every room...every special place she likes to lay and.....the screened in porch where she likes to watch the birds.

"Look Mom. See my boo boo. This is where Doc Ron stuck me with a needle. It hurt!"

Cassie held her little paw up for the pic.

I will miss her in my studio but never as much as I was missing her this past couple of weeks. I am so VERY grateful that she is on the mend.

THANKS to ALL of you who have sent me messages of good wishes and asking how Cassie was doing! I APPRECIATE ALL of you, my FRIENDS!!!

Best Wishes for a safe and joyous Independence Day! Hope you are able to spend time with family or friends or attend a big public celebration.

We will be spending a relaxing day with a few friends and our youngest son and his friend. Our eldest son and Tracie aren't here this year because they will be visiting soon and they needed a weekend of relaxation. Our other son is on his way to Afghanistan.

He wrote yesterday to wish us a Happy 4th and to let us know that he was in Romania. He has a short tour this time but as many of you parents are aware that does not lessen the danger. I pray for his and all our other troops' safe returns.

In my younger years I did not really pay much attention to the meaning of this day but time has shown me how precious the meaning of today. Living in this great country is a privilege that was not much realized by me until 9/11, my husband serving in Desert Storm then my husband and son serving together in Iraqi Freedom. I now have a deep appreciation for the sacrifices made by all who serve.....whether it be the troops or the families at home. The brothers, sisters, moms, dads and children both on the front lines and at home have given so much for the betterment of others.

Please take a minute today to remember all those who have died fighting for the freedom of others and those who are far from home and loved ones. Say a prayer for their safe return and for the success of the mission they so bravely serve.

Say a prayer for the families at home....the children awaiting parents to return....the parents awaiting children to return.

CELEBRATE YOUR FREEDOM AND THE GREATNESS OF OUR NATION!

This is Cassie on a day when she was doing well. She had climbed in my bag and was lying there when I discovered her. She is so sweet!

As of today she still has not eaten. She drank a little water and walked a little but just won't eat.

The vet called this morning to see how she was doing and we told him that she still won't eat. He was going to his clinic and said for one of us to bring her in so he could look at her. I took her. The incision was swollen and she had a temperature. 103.4 degrees. He checked her tummy and the incision was oozing. She has an infection which is not uncommon when the intestines are involved as they are full of bacteria.

Needless to say - he kept her. He is giving her antibiotics interveinously and some nourishment. She is very sick. My heart aches for her as I know the pain must be tremendous. He is going to give her a pain injection because a pill would not be good for the intestines. He isn't sure when she will get to come home. He said he is concerned about her well being.

I just pray she does get better and gets to come home. I am very concerned for her!

One thing he did comment on is that the ribbon was about 1/2 inch wide which was lucky because a string, thread or dental floss can cut through the intestine then there is very little that can be done. The wide ribbon had not cut the intestines so that was a good thing. He said dental floss is the worst as it is very strong.

Nala, our yellow tabby, misses her playmate. While Nala is very mischievous I do believe she senses that something is wrong. She didn't bother Cassie at all while she was home.

Please say a prayer for our Cassie. She truly needs them.

Update on Cassie

Thanks to all of you who have sent me kind thoughts and have Cassie in your prayers.

The vet called today and asked if we would mind bringing Cassie home early as she won't eat. He thinks she is frightened and perhaps if she comes home she will.
He knows us well as our son worked for him during high school and college.

Cassie is home. She can hardly move. Still hasn't eaten but did go to the potty.
I feel so sad for her but am VERY grateful she is going to be okay.

Apparently the vet did not have to remove a section of the intestines but rather made 3 incisions in the small intestines, snipped the ribbon and carefully removed it in pieces.

I can't even imagine the pain that poor kitty has.

I will NEVER allow her in my studio again! Will keep you posted on her progress.

My Sweet Cassie

I simply had to post this warning to all you animal lovers out there that have a precious pet you cherish.

Sweet Cassie loves to hang out with me in my art studio. Unfortunately I must keep my eye on her constantly as she loves to get in the various supplies that I have. She loves "INchies" and frequently takes off with them when I am working on them for a swap. She also loves ribbons, yarns and threads and will frequently grab them and start chewing.

I have always been able to get them from her but a couple of days ago I couldn't. She grabbed a pink ribbon approximately 14-16 inches long and ran with it. Hubby and I chased her all through the house but before we could catch her, she ate it.

Needless to say it caused her to get ill. She was vomiting on Wednesday morning so my husband took her to the vet. They ran tests and gave her barium to xray her but she kept vomiting it up. The vet determined she had a blockage. He asked if we were sure she ate the ribbon. My husband assured him that he was positive she did. The vet explained that the ribbon could cut her small intestines and surgery should be performed right away.

He did the surgery and sure enough she had the ribbon lodged in her intestines. Without prompt surgery she could have died.

Please, PLEASE do not let your pet in your studio! There are so many dangerous items that they may find and want to use a toys. As much as I love Cassie's company I know now that the studio MUST be off limits. Dangers are everywhere!

If we not known for sure that she had eaten the ribbon we would have lost our precious kitty. I am so grateful that we knew and that when my husband got up yesterday after I had left for the office he realized she was ill. I guess she came to him, lay down in front of him and meowed. He said he just knew she was saying "Please help me!" He immediately took her to the vet.

I am so happy that he did not hesitate. How lucky we are! The medical report is she is doing fine but is still at the vet and will be for a few days.

I will keep you posted.

Creation for Lucky May Visitor

Gathering supplies I begin creating the giveaway for the lucky winner of the May drawing. Painting will be the first step for this one-of-a-kind gift for that special person.

I pick up the brush and begin, letting the brush guide me on what to paint. Soon these daisies begin to take shape.

Once I finished them I laid them to the side to dry. Then I began to focus on what to create with these, my favorite flowers.

After they were dry I pressed Steam-A-Seam2 on the backside of the painted fabric.

Now I needed to decide how to present these lovely florals. MMMMmmmm...I think I will use a Vintage album page, sheer fabric, French lace and ribbon.

Paper Bag Wallets

Spent the day in my studio recycling brown paperbags into wallets.

I enjoy figuring out ways to reuse items that we would normally toss away or send to the recycle center. As I looked around my stash of brown paperbags I decided that it would be fun to create a wallet and cell phone holder.

Gathering bits and pieces of fabrics, trims and buttons I began assembling a wallet. Having no pattern, of course, I began experimenting with strengthening the bag so it wouldn't rip and how to assemble it.

Then using the sewing machine and a free-style quilting stitch I quilted one of the pocket, decorated it with bits of lace and a button. Soon I had a Vintage wallet.

Since I am frequently drawn to bright colors and have a lot of scraps in my fabric treasures, I decided to create a paperbag wallet in brights. Here is the result:

These unique creations are small and just the thing when you want to head off on a shopping trip and prefer to leave your large handbag at home. You can place your money in the deep pocket and cell phone in the front decorative pocket.

As always Tracie and I had a blast teaching our classes. The students were FANTASTIC and OH, so TALENTED! I am completely in AWE everytime we teach our painting classes at what the students create! This is especially rewarding when many of our students have NEVER painted before and to tackle painting a bird takes courage.

Each student brings a given talent that she was not aware she had. With our techniques and showing them a few tricks the paintings are BEAUTIFUL!

Without sounding like an infomercial....this IS the class for you if you have ever wanted to pick up a paint brush and begin creating something to be proud to show family and friends! YOU, too, can create beauties like these:

A Mother's Thoughts

Our middle son left for Afganistan this week and needless to say I miss him already. He will only be gone a short time ( 6 weeks) but being a mom I am still concerned for his safety.

Mother's Day will not be the same without his laughter and sense of humor entertaining all of us.

My heart is sad as I think of him being one of the most dangerous areas of the world.....and Oh, so far from home.

This tall handsome responsible young man will always be that tiny beautiful baby with the blue eyes and blond hair that I held in my arms many years ago.

I still see that little boy every time he laughs and teases. Precious are the memories of the fun times when he and his brothers share stories and play games.

I will be counting the days until his safe return and his laughter fills the air I breathe.

Blossoms Abound

As I gaze out my windows I am in awe of the color and beauty surrounding our home. The trees and shrubs are in full bloom and paint the countryside in vibrant hues.

Here are a few of the blossoms:

This is the lovely red bud my husband planted outside the kitchen window for me. The red bud is my favorite tree.

As I walk to the flower garden hubby planted my favorite shrub...the lilac bush. We had one planted for years but it never bloomed, so last year he dug up the old and planted a new one.....it is in full bloom.

Everyday as I arrive home I see this lovely crab apple tree. It is planted next to the driveway where it is surrounded by flowers all summer. Looking out the living room window I see this beautiful tree.

This is our apple tree. It provides a lovely view from the dining room.

We planted it 18 years ago when we built our house. It has struggled to survive but still blooms beautifully every spring. The wind has blown it over several times and hubby ties it back up. I won't let him dig it out and get a new one because it really works hard to survive.....I am just sentimental.

SPRING...my favorite time of year as the sleeping follage wakens and provides me with so much beauty to enjoy.

Another Year Has Passed.......

...and it feels moments ago that I was a small child....seconds ago that I became a wife and in a fleeting blink ... a mother. Where does time go?

As I think back on all those events in my life that took me down the path I walk today I think,"How Blessed I am!" Don't get me wrong I have had some sad and unhappy moments through the years but I have always considered those moments of growth. My belief that all happens for a reason and we grow in bad times and tend to be somewhat stagnet in good times. You know.....coasting along. Those moments helped me develop strength and endurance. They showed me that every moment of happiness and love is ever precious and should be treasured as a fine jewel...never to be replaced!

Remembering my young years I must smile as I can see that the dreams I had in those days long ago have since become the reality of my life.

Dreams of falling in love...
Dreams of getting married...
Dreams of a home and family...
Dreams of a career...
Dreams of watching my children grow into adults who follow their hearts and pursue their dreams.

I remember the birth of each of my sons....the joy and love that filled my heart beyond a capacity that I didn't even know I had. Their tiny faces, hands and feet moving in rhythm with my heart. As I held them closely and felt their hearts beat with mine I prayed for them to know that I loved them with a love greater than I could imagine.

Through the years they have shown me the meaning of life....They are what life is all about...They give me my eternity on earth.

My husband has always allowed me to pursue my dreams. As I enter these twilight years where my career will soon close and I will move to a time where I can spend my days playing in my art studio, my heart and soul is filled with smiles and overflowing with love.

Trust me....turning 62 is not an ending but new beginning...I am now counting not years but months until I can close my career days and begin the playing of my life. I feel as though I am nearing going full circle in life....play, work...then back to play.

Thank you, my husband, sons, daughter-in-law, and grandsons for giving me joy, happiness and a wonderful life! You EACH fulfill my being!

Thank you, mom, for giving me life which I enjoy to the fullest!!!!

More Creations

Here are more creations for vendor night at ArtFest:

Each of these journals is a one-of-a-kind journal. A composition notebook that is easily replaceable once it has been completed fits in the reusable cover. There is a coordinated pen enclosed in the front pocket.

The first three journals are made from fiber fused fabrics that are one-of-a-kind designs using a fused technique where threads, yarns, fabrics and paper are bonded together to create fabric. They are trimmed with ribbons, stitching and artificial flowers to enhance the fused design.

The insides were constructed using a coordinated cotton fabric.

This journal was created from some fabric I discovered at a small fabric shop when I was on a fabric hunting excursion with a friend. I fell in love with it and have been looking for just the right use. A journal is perfect.

Unexpected Visitor

As I glanced out our kitchen window I saw a figure moving through the grass. I kept watching until I realized it was the fox that has taken residence in our woods. Hurrying to my studio I grabbed the camera and scurried to snap a picture of this very elusive creature.

He stopped and looked around as if he knew someone was watching him. Then he slowly ambled across the open area.

I was able to snap a couple of pictures before he disappeared behind the trees.

What a catching sight! His colors are beginning to become vibrant as they do for the spring and summer seasons.

Last week I saw him with his mate playing in the far area of the pasture. Hopefully, I will be able to capture a picture of them together.....perhaps with tiny kits in the spring.

March Drawing Creation

Since Easter is in April this year I wanted to make the March prize an item that the winner could enjoy during the month of April. I knew it need to be something special so I began to search through my fabrics. I first thought a pale green floral would work then this lovely pink and white twall revealed itself. That's it!

I would make a basket then place some eggs and bits of candy in it. What a lovely table centerpiece this would make! Now I needed to create a pattern. I took a lid from the cabinet and traced a circle for the bottom of the basket. Then I measured the circumference to determine the amount of fabric needed for making the sides. I began stitching on the machine.

Once I had the sides and bottom stitched I made a handle.

As I looked through my drawer of various laces and trims I found this lovely lace to decorate the sides and a small string of tiny pearls to wrap around the handle. Then I made bows for each side where the handles connected to the basket.

Since eggs are always part of the Easter celebration I began creating eggs using some left over plastic eggs.

Here are the fruits of my labor:

After placing some angel hair grass in the basket I laid the eggs gently on the grass.

Now to complete the look I stitched a small fabric butterfly on the handle.

Today is a special day to share Love and Friendship and I must say I am completely surrounded by both!

My dear husband, who NEVER forgets any special day, gave me this card! The picture on the card reminds both of us of the fun we have with our precious pets...the hours of laughter and the mounds of memories we have shared as we watch their daily interactions. How often we interact in much the same way...playful fussing, flirting and snuggling.

And he gave me a dozen chocolate covered strawberries from SnowBall Ice Cream Shoppe! Our son, Brett, gave me a lovely floral piece he made.

I simply had to share....

Of course, the Wonderful taste of the strawberries I can only say is FABULOUSLY DELICIOUS!!

Then, when he returned from the mailbox there was a "special" package for me from my INchie Divas.

Look at these BEAUTIFUL creations!

Jane Eileen hosted this swap for me because I wasn't able to use my hand following surgery. Her clever packaging brought a smile right away.....NO calories in this treat...ONLY Love and Friendship!

I can look at these bits of eye candy anytime with no fear of adding pounds to my figure! Of course, my heart is growing emincely as I feel the creative love and energy these Divas put into each of the tiny inch by inch works of art!

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY

January 22, 1966

Forty-three (43) years ago today I married my high school sweetheart. My, how time passes!

I remember our meeting so vividly. We were in the school cafeteria when I first saw him. After that day we both sat in the same place everyday stealing glances and smiling shyly. Finally, after a couple of weeks a mutual friend introduced us. I was 15, a junior, and he was 17, a senior.

After our first date where we went sleigh riding, there were several more dates over the course of 3 years then we married.

Sometimes as I remember those days I think.."My! How young we were." Now 43 years later I think..."My! How old we are and how many years have passed....OH, so quickly!"

I would guess many would ask, "How have you made it last?" My reply would be, "With a lot of hard work, being friends, and knowing that love changes with the years. It grows from passion to a soft gentle understanding"

I tell everyone that we have grown up together. We were such kids when we married....18 and 21.

There were tough times and good times; sad times and happy times; quiet times and noisy times; lonely times and times together; angry times and laughing times. I could go on and on as I think we have faced every trial a married couple could face. But the one thing we were both committed to was making it work and not giving up. Making it work was hardwork sometimes and at other times very easy.

We have always been able to talk to each other. Our life goals have remained focused on the same dreams and throughout the years we have worked to accomplish those dreams.

My dear husband was in the military for 40 years and fought in 2 wars so as you can imagine we spent some stressful times apart. Thankfully he returned safely home. And the last time he went to war he served beside our middle son. What a sad time that was...having my husband and son in harms way yet bittersweet knowing they had one another.

He has now retired and I am hoping to join him soon. Then, finally we will be able to travel to those far away places, build more dreams and enjoy our final years together.

My anniversary message to him is:

"Thank you for loving me...in good and bad times. Thank you for sharing all these years with me. Thank you for being the father of our children. You have always been a wonderful role model for them. I am proud of our very loving and responsible sons. While we faced some tough times throughout the years we have emerged stronger and loved more. Thank you for always supporting me in pursuing my dreams and making many of them realities.

Making Valentines

Yesterday, I started trying to do a little bit of artwork. It is difficult since I can't use scissors yet. I have given it a couple of tries but just am not able to squeeze the scissors.

Prior to my surgery I had signed up for a swap of Valentine cards and needed to get them complete. After a little struggle I finally finished them. I am still unable to work on anything too small due to lack of using the fingers. I love creating with silk flowers so it seemed appropriate to use them in the cards. Here is the result:

Once the outsides were completed I worked on the insides. The lace and buttons are vintage. I bought the lace at a flea market last summer and purchased the buttons from a vendor at International Quilt Houston in November. The hearts are cut from fabric and attached with a fusible web. Printed the wording for the cards on the computer. Stamped the heart and lips on the envelope with a stamp I purchased for $1.00 on clearance.

Sharing Nature Gathered Challenges

During the past few months I have had the privilege to be part of a collaborative art group where we do a monthly challenge creation. Each month has a theme for the inspiration we use to create our works.

I thought I would share some of the works that I have created during these challenges.

December's theme for our challenge was "Reptiles and Amphibians". I created a fiber fused chameleon that I have named --- "Hidden".

November's theme for our challenge was "Fauna". My inspiration was a very grumpy cat that frequents our pasture and yard -- "Lost Kitty". This was painted on fabric with dried lavender and yarn felted into the painting.

October's theme for the challenge was "Field Notes". As I searched for inspiration I spotted several empty bird nests and realized that with winter on the way the tiny birds were beginning to fly south...I would miss them terribly. Appropriately this is "Notes of the Empty Nest". This has a fiber fused background with painted overlay, real twig and nest.

September's challenge was "Flora" Using pressed flowers and foliage I created the fused picture "Flowers from My Garden".

August's challenge was "Entomology" so using silk flowers and pressed leaves I created the field of flowers with a dragonfly. This piece is has no name. Perhaps by the time it goes on display for our art show in Vancouver, Washington I will have a name for it.

July, our first month of the challenge, began the adventure by using the theme, "Birds". My creation is a painting of a vermilion flycatcher on canvas which I fondly refer to as "Early Morning Song".

Word for 2009

On Sue Bleiweis' Yahoo Group for Fibre & Stitch there has been a lot of discussion regarding a word to challenge ourselves with for 2009. After giving this much thought I have decided that I need to have two words - CREATE and BLOG. I just couldn't give one up for the other.

I want to be able to create every day and to blog at least once a week. I tend to let other things in my life interfere with my achieving both on a regular basis.

Webster's Unabridged Dictionary defines Create as:

"...to cause to come into being, as something unique that would not naturally evolve or that is not ordinary processes;....to evolve from one's own thought or imagination, as a work of art;....to cause to happen; bring about;...."

Of course, the word Blog is not found in my edition of Webster because blogging is an activity that has come about in more recent times. Thus, I offer my own definition:

"Sharing thoughts, ideas, creations and feelings via the internet. Keeping in contact with cyber friends and meeting new friends through words, pictures and sharing images of creative projects."

STITCHES REMOVED

....today.

I have always been able to tolerate a lot of pain but this ordeal with my hand has been the pits! Today was no exception. I felt like such a wimp today when the nurse was removing the 8 stitches in my hand. The pain was excruciating!

As the tears rolled down my cheeks I apologized to the nurse for being a baby and she said, "I was in the operating room and knowing what was done I can really understand why you have the pain."

I was so happy to get the ordeal over. Now I have a brace that I will wear for 4-6 weeks. I can move my fingers now so hopefully I will be able to do some art in a few days.

Tonight I have taken a pain pill and am going to settle down and read a book or catch up on some magazines.

Thanks for all the emails with kind thoughts. I really appreciate hearing from you.

SIX DAYS HAVE PASSED

It will be a week tomorrow since the surgery on my hand. I never realized how much I would be handicapped without the use of my right hand. I can't open anything,can't fix my hair, can hardly put on my clothes and worst of all I am unable to do any art. Tuesday I get the stitches out and hopefully will go to a brace but the doc tells me no repetitive motion (whatever that means) for 4-6 weeks. For right now I am not to even use my fingers.

My dear husband tried to curl my hair but failed miserably. He has otherwise been taking very good care of me. It is the pits not to be able to do the smallest things.....like butter my toast.

I am so anxious to get back to work and back to creating. My mind has been going wild with ideas and I want to get started doing something.

WELCOME 2009

As 2009 begins I remember all the wonderful times for years gone by ....and dream of new memories yet to be.

When I was a child I believed in the power of dreams, the fun fairies have everyday and always wished on the first star I saw as the sun closed its eyes at the end of the day.

Those things have never changed for me....I am still following my dreams and as many have come true I seem to find new ones to guide my way. The fairies found in my garden give me joy whenever I feel sad. And I still wish upon the star.....

I hope I always hold to these childhood beliefs as I look forward to 2009 with dreams,fun and wishes within my heart.

May all of you have a BLESSED and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Time is Drawing Near........

MY CHRISTMAS WISH

Each year Christmas has a special meaning for me. Not only is it the day to celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, but it signifies a new beginning. I always have special memories from the year gone by and This, the Blessed Day, reminds me how precious each moment is. It gives me joy as I look forward to the new year that I will be sharing with family and friends.

I especially love this time of year as my family gathers together sharing fun and laughter and building memories that will last each of us a lifetime.

Tracie shared a Christmas poem and asked if each of us had one to share....here is mine:

Christ was born today to give us hope and joy, as
Heavens rang with songs of love.
Remembering all the moments
I have shared filled with

Winter's Bitter Greeting

The wind is blowing wildly
And a chill is in the air.

A quilt of snow is everywhere
Covering the earth as gently as a mother covers her child.

White is the color seen from my window
Except for tiny specks of black peeking at me.

I hear a small chirp as the birds anxiously wait
For me to sprinkle seeds atop the snow.

As I enter the door into my house
I hear a sweet song of thanks.

A smile comes across my face
And a warm feeling enriches my heart and soul.

The small gift is appreciated by both the bird and myself.

No Pictures Just Words

Well, today I am home recovering from having a bone graft on my lower left jaw. The past year or so I have had a lot of pain in the area and kept telling myself if was just an ear ache. But when I had my dental checkup and the dentist did an x-ray he said something was going on with the bone. He sent me to a Periodontist who said I had some infection in the bone.

So yesterday I went to have the area treated. The bone area was like a sponge so the Doc had to cut out the bad bone and build it back with some kind of cement stuff. It was the pits getting it done but I can say that I am happy it is over and I am on the mend.

After a restless night last night and a pain pill every 3-4 hours I feel much better today. My dear husband took good care of me last night.

I am hoping that now I can get back to my artwork and get some things done around the house. Of course, it will be a week or so before I can get those things accomplished but it is great to have this behind me. I was dreading the whole procedure and wish I could say it wasn't as bad as I thought - but I can't- It was the pits!

In about a week I will get the stitches out and then I am sure I can say "It is better now!"

Thanks to my family and friends for all the kind words and thought! I cherish each of you!

Winter's Arrival

When I awoke this morning Winter greeted me with a lovely soft blanket of snow. The ground was wearing a silky white gown and the trees swayed in the breeze. It was a beautiful sight to see as the sun began to peek over the horizon.

Nature Gathered October Challenge

It is constructed of fiberfusion and I have painted it.

I loved doing this piece and I saw the perfect poem right after I completed the artwork. How timely was that?

The Dream IS Within Your Grasp.....

While looking at the WONDERFUL brochure about Orvieto, Italy I have fallen in love with this quaint and picturesque village. What a ROMANTIC and ARTISTIC adventure to ponder as I dream of the experience that lay ahead.

DEPOSTION is a beautiful marble sculpture created by Ippolito Acalza and dates to 1579. What details and OH, how it has survived the passage of time. I can hardly believe I will stand close to it and observe it's beauty first hand.

The Renaissance cloister of S. Glovanni church founded in the year 900 then was rebuilt at the turn of the 17th century. WOW! I have only dreamed of seeing this timeless beauty close up.

The senic view of the this BEAUTIFUL and CAPTIVATING village where art abounds and creativity is felt in every breath. I can hardly wait to watch the sunrise and sunset surround each structure with a colorful glow.

Tracie Lyn and I are planning a nonconventional journal class for our students. We want them to capture the surroundings in a way that will continue to remind them of the fun and excitement of walking the enchanting streets of Orvieto. We plan to show how to incorporate the botanicals and other elements available into a journal filled with memories of a time with friends whose talents and creativity come together in a place where the greatest of past artists also gathered and created.

We would LOVE to have you join us on the FANTASTIC journey! It will be time to go before we know it so if you are thinking about going please contact Kirstin and Bill for the details. You will be traveling and creating with friends so this is a GREAT opportunity to see Italy in a way you would not see it on an ordinary trip. Getting Ready for ArtFiber Fest

Getting ready for ArtFiber Fest has been a lot of fun. I have spent many hours creating away in my studio.

This is the pin cushion for the swap. Very serious little guy is keeping a quiet watch over me as I prepare for the trip to Port Townsend.

Next I started working on the plushy swap. Making these little octopi for the plushy swap has made me laugh during the entire process.

As each one was created it seemed to be watching me making the rest of its friends. They look so angry that I can't stop laughing everytime I look at them.

I gave Tracie hers and she,too, says she laughs everytime she looks at that angry little face. I hope that each person in our plushy swap has has much joy with these little ones as I have had.

Artful Experience!!!

Teaching classes is something I dearly love! And the students are BEYOND terrific! The artful experience of Art & Soul was again filled with the LOVE of SHARING, HUGS from FRIENDS, and every breathe fresh from CREATIVITY!

Each class, every moment is a memory that I have lived over and over since my returned home.

Tracie and I began this adventure with teaching the Painted Nature Fabrics. Each student created a most BEAUTIFUL piece...filled with color and unique creativity! Tracie has the pictures for this class on her blog, so please visit and gaze at these treasures!

Next we taught the Yummy Fused Papers. The students were eager to learn and the results speak for themselves. The bookmarks and tags were made using pressed botanicals from my garden. The gift wrap papers are just BEAUTIFUL also! Wouldn't you love to get a present wrapped in these?!!

Here are some of the LOVELY creations these ladies did on Thursday evening:

Friday began with a meeting of our Nature Gathered group. Jan Harris, Andrew Borloz, Paula McNamee, Bee Shay, Cynthia Mooney, Tracie and I loved the "coffee" talk" and planning for our future creations. I feel so humbled to be in the group with these talented artists.

Friday....Tracie, Jan Harris and I went to visit Katherine Dunn at Apifera Farm. What a TRULY LOVING lady! She is as giving and kind as her blog reflects! We loved seeing her studio where she creates and then the walk out to see the animals was FANTASTIC! These captivating creatures see Katherine and they come running! She loves each one and you can sure see the love is reprocated. Here are a couple of pictures we took with Katherine......

Later on Friday evening we taught the Lusious Layered Fusion Fabric class. The classroom was filled with talented artists eager to begin creating these BEAUTIFUL fabrics....

Sadly Saturday morning we had to return. My day job as a Medicare manager required that I return to those daily duties, however, the memories, fun times, new and old friendship have a SPECIAL place in my heart!

By The Sea

Well, I have been creating away in my studio....making schools and schools of fish.

My Inchie swap goup will be exchanging INchies at Art & Soul which starts this week. YEAH!!!! So since the theme for Art & Soul is "By the Sea" I decided to fish would be perfect! As you can see fish are on my INchies........

Here is a sneak peek at the fish I have been creating for my INchie artists. They are pockets to hold the INchies we will be swapping.......

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE making a surprise for the swaps!!! The INchies are ALWAYS so BEAUTIFUL that they speak to me and ask for a SPECIAL way to be displayed.

Can hardly wait to arrive in Portland.....What FUN I will have.

PLEASANT SURPRISES

Today was a day for pleasant surprises in my mailbox. As I opened the mailbox and saw an envelope I knew right away it was from my dear friend, Lisa Engelbrecht. Her envelopes are immediately identifiable with the Beautiful calligraphy she does. I so admire her WONDERFUL talent of the written word.

She send me this magnet with this cute little guy. Isn't he darling?

My next surprise was receiving the Autumn edition of "Haute Handbags". A couple of my knitted "Ma'Dam" bags are featured in the gallery section. But here is the best part of my surprise - Mary Stanley's bag is right across on the opposite page! She is another favorite artist of mine and I am THRILLED that our bags are opposite one another.

Who knew the mail delivery could brighten my day so much?!

From Gloomy to Simple and Elegant

It has been a bit cloudy and rainy lately so in the words of Eyore,
"OH, What a gloomy day." Rather that let it get me down and adopt Eyore's mood, I decided to do something to brighten the day a little.

Since it was a bit chilly cooking something in the oven came to mind - What to cook? I thought a roast sounded good. In my hectic schedule I am always looking for something to cook that doesn't require a lot of time.

I peeled some potatoes then covered the roast with seasonings, onions, garlic powder, potatoes and carrots. Popped it into the oven. Fixed some frozen green beans with real bacon bits, onion and seasoning and began to let them cook on the stove.

Off I went to create.... Fun time, you know!

When all was finished I thought it would create a romantic, yet simple dinner to take a bottle of wine from the fridge and set the table with my good china. That I did.

What a Beautiful way to end a "gloomy" day! Eyore would say,
"OH, happy me!"

Glimpses of a Dream

Thinking of going to Italy is a small glimpse of a dream that is about to come true. Waking to a sunrise on the other side of the world where the view is breath taking with a scenery that has aged beautifully. Age only enhances what the eye is seeing.

Architecture - that no matter the age still mystifies the mind.

A place were lovers' hearts are kissed by the ancient artists' mortal gifts of art whether with stone or paint. Air - that creates an atmosphere to capture romantic moments to treasure forever.

This, my friend, is my small glimpse of the dream of going to Italy.....to a quaint village known as Orvieto, sitting atop a plateau overlooking vineyards and tiny homes.

Tracie and I will teach you how to use the elements from the experience to create a journal filled with memories of the days you spent getting to know about this Fabulous culture. You will drink the wines and eat the foods that come from the small market where fresh produce from the fields are sold.

Tracie Lyn and I would love to have you join us on this experience of a lifetime. We will be guided during this Adventure by Kirstin and Bill Steiner.

This is but a small "Glimpse of a Dream", not just for me, but for YOU.

Art Unraveled........

.....another EXTRAORDINARY experience filled with EXCITEMENT and the BLESSING of creating and meeting NEW FRIENDS!

Although our trip was off to a rocky start with Tracie's flight being canceled and her flying standby all the way, that was NO indication of the rest of the weekend in Phoenix. Once I arrived at the hotel EXCITEMENT filled the air and the fragrance of friendships old and new captured my senses.

After getting settled in the room it was time to meet my INchie group for our swap. WOW! What a group! They were the loveliest and most talented women one could hope to meet. We spent the next hour or so swapping our INchies and sharing introductions. My only regret is that I did not get to sit with each of them and visit the night away. I could hardly believe my eyes as I looked at each of the UNIQUELY created tiny works of art! Each and captured my heart as I thought of how these tiny bits of art were carefully and lovingly created and assembled.

Everyone pitched in to ensure that all participants received INchies from the other! Look at these BEAUTIFUL CREATIONS!!!

I received these AWESOME gifts from various members of the INchie group. I can hardly wait to use these in artistic creations.

Soon it was time to pick Tracie up at the airport. We went from the airport to dinner then headed to our room to get ready for class the next morning.

Arriving at class we greeted each student then the FUN began! It was as though we were all friends FOREVER! There was much ANTICIPATION as each person picked up their paint brushes and began to paint. Their creations were brought to life as the paints blended on the canvas. As Tracie and I hugged each person leaving class there was a moment of sadness that the day had come to an end. We had made new friends and loved being able to share our time with them. What BEAUTIFUL works of art they had created in class!

As always the next day proved to be as much fun as the day before. This was the Vintage Journal class. WHAT color combinations and textures! Aren't these just BEAUTIFUL!!!

Again we felt moments of sadness as each person left. More new friends had touched our lives and took a special place in our hearts.

Later that evening we went to the banquet and had a TERRIFIC time. Here is a picture of us with Vicki, one of our students and friend! Isn't she lovely?

As we began our journey home we reminisced on the experiences, fun, excitement and sense of joy in sharing with others.

AGAIN, Linda had put together a time for all of us to leave the worries of the world behind and to spend time with friends.

She had given all of us, teachers and students, an atmosphere filled with creativity and relaxation!
